Largest new generation Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV) designed in-house and built Indigenously was launched on Nov 24 at Goa Shipyard.

This 105 M, state- of- the -art OPV is first of the series of six OPVs being built by GSL for Indian Coast Guard. The OPV will help meet the increasing requirement of the Indian Coast Guard for undertaking Policing and Patrolling of the vast Indian Exclusive Economic Zone.

DG Coast guard Vice Admiral Anurag G Thapliyal acknowledged that “The launching of First OPV built by GSL is a major milestone in our quest to acquire multi-utility platforms for the Indian Coast Guard which can mount prolonged surveillance in our sea areas, especially the EEZ”.

Six OPVs were being built by the GSL as part of twelfth Coast Guard Development plan, covering the period 2012-17. The new inductions are aimed at augmenting the OPV force levels. These all-weather work horses are vital for India’s oceanic geography comprising two open seas on both coasts.

OPVs built by GSL and their timely delivery has enabled Coast Guard HQ and Govt. to clear repeat order for five more CGOPV.

Speaking on the occasion CMD GSL said “the OPV being launched today speaks of GSL’s commitment to the “Make in India” initiative of our Hon’ble Prime Minister.  Manifestation of this initiative will be seen more and more from GSL in times to come. Within 2 years of keel laying we are launching this vessel, and this is despite severe odds experienced in the form of excessive monsoon experienced at Goa this year and delayed delivery schedule of major equipment including Stern gear, DG sets, ‘A’ Brackets, Rudders, etc”.

The CMD observed that there is no parallel of such rapid construction in Indian ship building industry. This will further reinforce our unwavering commitment and execution skills for timely delivery of ships.

He said the GSL has received a formal communication that the government is considering construction of all eight MCMV ships for Indian Navy to be built at GSL.

To date GSL has built 22 state-of- art Patrol Vessels for Coast Guard, which includes Offshore Patrol Vessel, Fast Patrol Vessels and Advanced Offshore Patrol Vessels ranging from 46 M to 105 M length.
